You Can't Go Home Again
Harley had protected her distress better than most, during the whole Halloween-Nightmare fiasco. Truth be told, the whole ordeal was just as difficult as any Suicide Squad mission. And she had felt disconnected from the others, when the Nightmare had ended.
And after months of avoiding going back to her world, Harley finally admitted that there were a lot of loose ends back home. She couldn't avoid her door any longer.
It did not take her long to find her Nexus door, after all she had used her lipstick to paint a big red heart on it.
She left one Nightmare behind, and stepped through the door to enter another. She was back with her team, in the middle of a huge gun fight. And despite the fact that there were some Suicide Squad members who were starting to 'understand' her... all of them were shocked when after she stepped through the door, her eyes were filled with cold-steel determination.
There were no thoughts in her head as she shot several of the henchmen of the 'villain of the week' that her team was fighting. Harley didn't even react to her name being called out by the other Suicide Squad members, urging her to take cover. She just kept walking forward, shooting people as necessary, until finally she got close enough to the Crime Syndicate mob boss, and used a high kick to knock him down to the ground.
Harley pointed her gun at him. "Cease Fire." And he directed the order to his henchmen.
Once again the Suicide Squad had completed the mission. And they were guided back to Arkham, Harley not even listening to Waller as the older woman detailed how they would be rewarded with less time on their prison records. Harley knew it didn't matter any more.
It was weird returning to the chaotic Arkham Asylum once again. Harley spent an extra long time in the showers, just letting the water run over her body, even as it got cold. She didn't care that the Arkham guards were watching her. They always did. And besides, when the water got cold, Harley finally allowed herself to shiver. To allow herself to feel pain, sorrow, jealously, anger, sadness, betrayal, loneliness, disgust, emptiness... all the emotions that she had held back the whole time.
Once dressed in the Arkham 'supplied' outfit, Harley was returned to her big cage, in the middle of the big, empty room. She said nothing to the guards, as they taunted her, locking her up again. She said nothing for a long time. And then, when she was alone again, Harley slowly climbed the bars of the cage, and spent some time on the acrobat ropes that were left there.
She no longer belonged here. Harley knew that now. There were no more chances for redemption...
Harley had waited too long. She had put her faith in the wrong thing. And there was no way to fix that... not in her world. But she promised herself, that as soon as she could return to the Nexus, she would make the most of her second chance.
She could be a better person there. She could not let the opportunity slip her by... and be too late. Once again.
