When All Else Fails... Blow It Up!
It was a typical night for Harley. She had a large bowl of M&Ms in her lap. And was watching the Food Network. Poocyhena laid by her side, his head on Harley's foot. It was a very quiet night.
Until Harley's phone vibrated.
She was very surprised to see the name 'Floyd' on her caller ID. She smiled a little as she answered the phone.
"Darlin'. Long time since I heard your voice." She grinned.
"Sweet cheeks... Look this is not a social call. We need your help."
Harley sat up at the tone of his voice.
Deadshot explained the situation. The Suicide Squad were still pulling in serious overtime, filling in for a still missing Batman. And unfortunately they had missed a threat to the lives of all the citizen of Gotham, simply because they were overworked trying to clean the streets of the gangs.
Several people in Gotham were getting sick. And there a few dozen were in serious enough condition, that they were now laying in intensive care in the hospital. And after investigating the cause behind their illnesses... the Suicide Squad discovered that there was a chemical spill from an old Joker Toxin factory that was getting into the main water reservoir.
They were already helping clean up the reservoir. But they needed someone to go into the Joker Toxin factory and ensure that the chemical spill would never hurt anyone again. And that was why Floyd had called Harley. She was the only one on the team who could not be affected by the Joker Toxin.
They needed her.
It only took her a matter of moments to get changed. And only a few more minutes to PINpoint to Gotham. The whole city seemed different today. Harley could feel a darkness weighted on the streets that wasn't there before. And that was saying something... considering the fact that Gotham was a pretty dark place on a normal day.
Floyd was waiting for her. He wore that damn mask, which she knew meant that he was not playing any games tonight. Nor up to being teased. So she sighed, and followed him as he lead her through the quiet streets of Gotham.
"How is everyone?" Harley asked him, quietly.
"Managing." Floyd's voice was distant. She could feel that he was a little resentful about how she had her freedom -- and he has not. That he was still trapped by Waller's intentions. And Harley promised herself that she would find a way to free the other Suicide Squad members.
It did not take them long to get to the abandoned Joker Toxin factory. It was one of the few that remained in the city. All the same, it reminded her of the one that she had died in. The one she was created in.
"I will make sure he doesn't hurt anyone else..." Harley promised Floyd. He gave her a bundle of dynamite for the task at hand. And then watched as she entered the factory. He almost didn't want to leave. A bad feeling sat in his stomach. But he had to go back to work. Go back to pretending that the Batman was still protecting this city.... when it was just him and the other members of the Suicide Squad.
It was a strange feeling walking through the factory, alone. The smell and taste of Joker Toxin was all around her. Harley took a deep breath, memories of being in that vat of Joker Toxin filled her mind. It could not affect her anymore. She had no reason to get upset. Or feel afraid.
Strategically, she placed the dynamite along the walls of the factory, along key points where she knew that an implosion would be created.
She continued her efforts, heading further and further into the factory, and down into the basement. As she moved down the stairs to the basement, she felt a sensation of being watched. Of being followed.
As Harley placed the final bundles of dynamite along the support beams that held up the building. She heard whistling. A familiar tune. Whistled by a very familiar pair of lips.
"I know it is you, Jack." Harley leaned up against one of the support beams.
"No one calls me that, sweetheart. Especially not you..." Joker stepped into the light, where she could see him properly.
Harley popped a piece of gum in her mouth, chewing it. Staring him down.
"Where are your new friends?" Joker asked her.
"Its only me tonight." Harley huffed in laughter. "Disappointed?"
"I could never be disappointed to see you, Harls." He approached. Harley stood her ground, letting him close the distance between them. It was not until she felt his hand on her hip that she reacted. And she grabbed his wrist and flipped him, until he landed on the ground with a loud crack filling the air.
"Bitch..." He swiped at her feet. Harley cartwheeled away, and landed in a slight crouch. Her hand pulled out her wooden bat from her weapon belt. And she stood again, swinging it at her side.
He lunged. She swung her bat at him, smiling as she heard it crack upside his head. He lunged again, the taste of steel at her side, as he drew his knife against her stomach. Harley pushed him back, slamming him up against one of the support beams. And shoved the end of her bat in his stomach.
He laughed. His laughter filled the basement. "You will never win. This is my game! My time!"
"Fuck you Jack." He growled at the sound of his old name. He lunged again. Harley punched him hard, laughing herself at the sound of his teeth breaking.
She held up the switch in hand, the one that controlled when the dynamite that she had planted around the factory would be detonated. "It is time for you to realize... that you don't control me anymore."
"You crazy bitch! You will blow us both up!" Joker struggled to get to his feet.
Harley laughed. "Worth it." And she pressed the button. The explosion ringed in her ears, as the building fell all around her. Dirt and debris filled the air. And then she felt the sensation of Joker tackling her around the waist, and his hands around her throat as they were surrounded by rumble. And death.
Until Harley's phone vibrated.
